Foster Home Feedback ** No Cats 12/28/25 Foster Feedback: Keekai and I have spent just a little over two weeks together and he is proving to be a pretty amazing pup. He is so friendly to all strangers and dogs we meet on our walks. He is always up for an adventure and we spend most days walking through the woods. He has also done a good job going on some runs with me! Keekai loves to play fetch in the backyard til he can’t fetch anymore! This dude loves tennis balls! When people knock on the door he doesn’t bark but instead gets ready to greet them friendly. Keekai has a lot of energy and we are working on learning how to chill out and relax. He is so smart and has learned how to solve the toughest treat puzzles the shelter has with ease. 12/15/25 Foster Feedback: Keekai has been living with me for a few days now and I am beyond impressed. He slept in his kennel all night with no fuss the first night and has continued to do so. He is so smart! He knows sit and lay down. I taught him “kennel”, and we are working on down as he was very curious about our kitchen counters at first (though has not been a problem after some redirection). I was told he never had an accident at the shelter and the same has been true in our home. He is potty trained like a pro! I took him in public to two busy cafes, and he did tests for the baristas, let strangers pet him happily, and was not nervous around little kids. His demeanor blew me away. We also met up with some dog friends. Keekai was nervous as first but then had so much fun playing with both dogs. Be warned: Keekai is a little mouthy when showing affection or getting too playful but I’m working on that with him. I’ve taken him on walks/runs and he can go for 5 miles and still have energy for more. As soon as you get home, he will be ready for a nap though. This is a dog that wants structure, jobs, and order. He will thrive with an active person who has a good routine. You will have so much fun exploring together! 11/5/25 Volunteer Feedback: I took Keekai out for a kennel break yesterday and he did so well. I was told that he was nervous of men, but he met both my dad and brother-in-law and did fantastic! No hesitation saying hi! Keekai also did well with my dog. My dog is more submissive, and they had no issues. They played very well together. He really was a joy and does well walking on a leash. He wants to chase the squirrels, but with a two handled leash he was super easy to control. Keekai is a very happy guy and enjoys playing with toys and snuggling with his humans! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
