S A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Nero Best Guess for Breed: Chihuahua mix
Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of January 2026 SEX: Male
Approximate Weight: 14.6 lbs
Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: DC area foster home
Special adoption considerations: Because Nero is extremely shy and nervous, he is REQUIRED to go to a home that already has a confident resident dog that will show him the world isn't so scary and help him build his braves.
Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think this pup would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.
About Nero: Nero is a sweet, gentle little guy who’s still learning that the world can be a safe and cozy place. He’s quite shy at first, but day by day he’s starting to come out of his shell in the most heart-melting ways.
Recently, Nero has begun hovering near his people when he needs to go outside instead of staying tucked away in one spot — a big win for this timid boy! He’s doing well with outdoor potty breaks and will happily go on walks, though he sometimes walks a little too close to your heels (he just wants to stay near his person ).
Nero does wonderfully with other dogs and currently lives with a sweet senior pup, whom he often follows around for comfort and confidence. He finds a lot of reassurance in canine companionship, so a calm dog friend in his future home could be a big plus.
He’s still nervous about being leashed and may try to hide when it’s time for a walk, but once he’s scooped up or gently guided, he settles in just fine. Nero does seem more cautious around men and may shy away when approached, especially in doorways, though he warms up more easily with women. With patience and consistency, he continues to make progress.
At mealtime, Nero eats reliably — he just prefers a little privacy. He’s happiest eating or drinking when alone or when no one is watching. When it comes to relaxing, though, he’s all about closeness: Nero loves curling up next to you on the couch or bed and soaking up quiet companionship.
He tolerates the crate but isn’t a big fan, and early on he liked to hide under furniture, so blocking off under-couch areas is recommended. Once he feels safe, he’s content to lounge nearby.
Most importantly, Nero has shown no signs of aggression or destructive behavior. He’s simply a sensitive soul who wants warmth, gentleness, and time. As he grows more comfortable, he’s showing more interest in moving around, exploring outside, and connecting with both people and dogs.
Nero is a truly special little guy, and it’s been wonderful to watch his confidence slowly bloom. He’ll thrive in a calm, patient home that understands shy dogs and celebrates small victories — and he’ll repay that kindness with quiet loyalty and lots of snuggles.
