t, and just a little feisty, she currently weighs about 28 pounds and packs a whole lot of heart into her small frame. Her exact age is a bit of a mystery. Paperwork lists her as around a year old, but given her petite size and mellow demeanor, it’s possible that estimate isn’t quite right—or that she’s mixed with a smaller breed. She doesn’t display classic over-the-top puppy energy, and it’s still unclear how much bigger she may get. Ella is a truly wonderful dog who thrives on companionship . She wants to be by your side as much as possible and will make an incredibly devoted partner. Because of this, she would do best in a home that can minimize alone time, especially in the beginning. While she likes her crate and sleeps in it, she can sometimes panic when left alone and may attempt to move the crate or shred nearby items. With time, consistency, and confidence-building, this is expected to improve. She is still adjusting to life outside the shelter and is currently quite mellow and timid. Her true drive level is still emerging, but she shows signs of being naturally athletic and agile. As her confidence grows, she may really enjoy activities like agility or other fun, interactive outlets. So far, she has not shown the stereotypical “crackhead Mal” energy and may turn out to be on the mellower side. Ella does experience car sickness, which Dramamine has helped with. As she gets used to the car, she has all the makings of a perfect adventure companion. She even enjoys being carried in a sling bag and stays calm and content close to her person. With other dogs, Ella can be mildly reactive at times—mainly barking at dogs passing by the house or on walks—but she is not aggressive. Introductions take time and patience, which is understandable given her recent shelter experience and separation from her sister. She now coexists beautifully with her foster’s resident dog, and future introductions are expected to become easier with proper management. Cats are unknown. Kids are also unknown, but Ella is gentle, non-reactive, and notably not mouthy at all—she does not play-bite, which is rare and impressive. Combined with her small, manageable size, she is likely to do very well with respectful children. Ella is a sensitive, loving soul who just needs a little patience and stability to truly shine . In the right home, she will be an incredible companion—loyal, affectionate, and always right by your side. All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and six-months subscription. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
