Australian Shepherd Dogs For Adoption in Sandy, UT, USA

Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $250.00. Hi there! I’m Murphy Charmtail (named for my gorgeous fluffy tail) and I’m looking for my forever home! I am a

3 year old mini-aussie. I currently weigh in at about 26lbs. I’m a bit skinny, so foster mom is feeding me extra portions right now. We think 30lbs will be a perfect weight for me. I am a super handsome, super fun, super smart guy. Let me tell you all about myself! I am crate trained, leash trained and e collar trained. I know several commands, including sit, shake and smile. I also have really great recall! I am potty trained, but I also have a tendency to mark my territory, so I wear a belly band in the house. That takes all the fun out of marking, so I generally don’t do it anymore. I am good with dogs, but I do need a good intro and a strong leader. I like to play hard, and when rough play goes on too long, I will escalate and can get into scuffles. If you watch me and make sure I take a break before I get too amped up, I do great. Currently I live with dogs of all sizes and behave very nicely with everyone. I love to play and I'm very athletic - I can jump a 3 foot fence with no problem! I do have a high prey drive. Hunting squirrels is my favorite pastime! I haven’t spent much time around cats or chickens, but we’re pretty sure they’re going to be a “no” for me. I looooove humans. I am even wonderful with strangers. I bond fast and hard to my people, and I can be protective at times. There have been a couple of times that I told other dogs in my foster home to get away from my foster mom. Foster mom says that’s not okay, so I’ve stopped doing that here. Again, a strong leader will be important to me. I am so nice and snuggly, and I really chill so nicely in the house (as long as I’ve had plenty of play time!) Foster mom says I’m such a good boy and I deserve a wonderful family. Could that be you? Apply to meet me today at bit.ly/RRAdoptionApplication

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
