years old cattle dog/hound mix and I’m 42 lbs. I am friendly and excited to meet new people! I’m a little shy when something scares me. I’m learning to walk on this new thing called a leash, and I’m doing well! If we are in a place that I feel safe I’m great on a leash. If I’m a little more nervous I might lay down on the floor to hide. I’m great with other dogs! I’m still figuring out how to play, but I’m very tolerant of any dog I meet! Once I'm comfortable, I'm friendly with other dogs. My foster’s small reactive dog got spicy with me and I just ran away from her. I would thrive with a confident doggie friend who can show me the ropes. I could be an only dog too, but I will need a dedicated owner with a lot of patience and love to help me come out of my shell. I can be a little stubborn, most of my life I didn’t need to do what humans said. Because of that I don’t always listen when they tell me to come to them, go sit somewhere etc. But if you put me on a leash I will usually comply. I’m good with kids of all ages because I’m so calm. I’m not overly jumpy or hyper. I would be down for a small adventure if you want and then I’m happy to lounge around in a quiet home while I build my confidence. I’m pretty moderate on the energy level if I need to be. I will follow your lead. I’m house trained and have had no accidents in my foster home. I just need a routine to stick to! I’m crate trained too! I’m not a big fan of entering my crate. I will go in with a high value treat but I’m a little hesitant. Once I’m in my crate I whine a little but stop after a few minutes. The good news is I don’t seem to be destructive at all! With a little practice I could likely be a free roaming house dog! Another great thing about me? I’m not loud! I have a hound bark but I only bark when I’m actively playing with other dogs. I don’t even bark at the door when the mailman comes! I enjoy affection and pets from humans, I would enjoy just hanging out with you on the couch. If you want a sweet, calm, mild mannered girl like me apply to meet me using this link. bit.ly/RRAdoptionApplication

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
