ooking for his forever home! GATSBY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Gatsby Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd/Plott Hound Mix Best Guess for Age: 4 months as of February 2026 SEX: male Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 24.4 pounds as of 2/15/2026 Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy. Gatsby is Looking For: Hiya! I’m Gatsby! I’m a growing puppy on a very important mission: finding my forever family. Right now, I’m busy learning how to be a puppy, which includes wiggling, playing, being a bit mischievous, and dreaming of all the adventures ahead. I can’t wait to explore the neighborhood, go on walks, visit dog parks, and maybe even try doggie daycare to make lots of new friends along the way. I’m ready for a home that’s full of love, adventures, and plenty of chances to learn new tricks, maybe even a puppy class or two so I can show off my clever side. Think you have room in your heart (and on your lap) for a silly, snuggly little guy like me? What My Foster Says About Me: Gatsby is a lover and a bundle of fun wrapped up in a tiny, bouncy puppy body! He’s silly, playful, and full of personality, always ready to make you smile. One of his favorite discoveries? The magic of a heated car seat, plop him down and it’s instant puppy nap mode. He LOVES toys (and anything he can get his paws on) and is happiest when he’s playing and exploring with his people or his dog friends. Bath time? A breeze! Gatsby rests his head on your leg like the calm, sweet boy he is while getting cleaned. Gatsby is a social butterfly with other dogs during playtime, bringing his full-on “LET’S BE BEST FRIENDS!” energy to everyone he meets. Smart and eager to learn, he’s already mastering basic commands like sit, come, down, and stay, and is making steady progress on crate training. Every new trick is a proud victory for him! True to his hound roots, Gatsby has the funniest expressions and some adorably judgmental looks. His personality is larger than life, and though he has the trademark hound “talk", when he has big feelings, he’s learning to channel his excitement through playtime with friends. Fetch? He's ready and waiting. Sitting on laps? Yes, please! Pick him up and he melts right into you, resting his head on your shoulder like he was born for cuddles. He loves spending time with his people and sharing all his favorite toys, treats, and adventures. And the crown jewel of his collection? His stuffed lion. He loves it so much he’d probably take it everywhere if he could. Gatsby is pure laughter, cuddles, and love and he’s ready to bring all of it to his forever family. Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog. Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
