l to cool off. Weston would be more than happy to spend his time chillin in the backyard, and perhaps coming inside for a cozy place to sleep! He isn't one who loves pets or big hugs, and will likely need assistance learning better coping skills for veterinary care, grooming, etc. He does best with other medium energy dogs who like to run around together rather than rough and rowdy wrestlers! betterdogdaze Foster Friday highlighting our sweet Weston! ?? Weston has been at the shelter (VCAS) since 2024. He was part of the long stay group for being there so long. He’s currently in our care for foster, but it’s not a long-term placement. Weston needs a stable long-term foster or forever home soon so he can finally settle for good. Weston is 5-year-old German Shepherd mix with the softest, most sensitive soul. When I first brought him home, he stayed on the opposite side of the room and just observed. Now a month later he follows me everywhere. He lays at my feet. He gently licks my hands and legs. He constantly checks in. His tail wags when he sees me. It’s very obvious he wants love. He seeks it. He just isn’t always sure how to accept it yet. He doesn’t want to be smothered or overwhelmed, but he leans into gentle pets and soft affection. He would do best in a house with no young kids or very heavy foot traffic. He’s potty trained, friendly with dogs of all sizes and is good with cats too. With other gentle play dogs, he really blossoms. He enjoys social time and gains confidence from positive dog interactions. He doesn’t need to live with another dog he just needs a patient person who understands he won’t be a Velcro dog overnight and is willing to continue building his confidence through walks, outings, and friendly dog meetups. He loves simple things: backyard lounging, cooling off in a kiddie pool, peaceful walks, and having a cozy dog bed inside. We are really trying to get this boy a good place to land ??#camarilloshelter #germanshepherd #foster #rescuedog #dog ? Home - Good Neighbours betterdogdaze Meet Weston ???? WESTON IS ON THE URGENT LIST FOR FOSTER/ADOPT! Weston is a what Avery likes to call a total celebrity. He is part of the long stay challenge group and has been at the shelter since 2024. He is a 5 year old shepherd mix. Weston is a very very shy guy but the sweetest boy we know. He takes a while to trust, but when he does he happily walks next to you very slowly and wonderful on a leash. He will take treats very gently from you once he feels safe with you. We know Weston has been so overlooked because of his shyness. It’s obvious he wants love he just doesn’t know how to accept it so easily and needs patience. What makes Weston so precious is that in playgroup and with other dogs he THRIVES. He becomes the popular social butterfly and you can really see his personality come out. Weston has a couple of human friends he responds too well and trusts them. He just needs someone who will be patient with him and not expect him to show them tons of attention and love right away. He needs somewhere just to feel safe first before he can let himself finally relax and show his personality. A shy pup like Weston doesn’t benefit at all being in a shelter with constant random visitors walking by him. He really needs a slow place to have the good rest and decompress he deserves. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
