Noelle – Chocolate Female, 1.5 years, 55 lbs. Do you believe in Christmas Miracles? Noelle certainly does! Just a week before Christmas, this sweet girl was surviving on the streets when she suddenly found herself in the shelter. She thought her story was over — after all, who would choose a “broken” dog? But that’s when her miracle arrived. The shelter reached out to the wonderful folks at Lab Rescue, who stepped in and saved her life just in time for her to spend Christmas with her foster family! Noelle’s early days were tough. She was on her own, fending for herself, and at some point, suffered a broken leg that never healed quite right. Today, she occasionally may have a little hitch in her giddy up (as they say) — but don’t mistake that for a disability. Noelle is the definition of resilience. She greets each day with joy, curiosity, and a zest for life that’s contagious. Whether she’s playing fetch, romping with canine friends, joining her people for a stroll, or learning new skills, she’s all in. No modified activity needed — this girl is ready for adventure. She gets along with all types of other dogs, big and small; and while she hasn’t been cat tested, she doesn’t show strong tendencies to chase. Like most labs, she is food motivated, a quick learner, and highly trainable. She is housebroken and sleeps inside at night on her own dog bed. She is still polishing her inside manners and learning to be a polite young lady. Noelle has been evaluated by several veterinarians and orthopedic specialists, all of whom agree that the break occurred quite some time ago and would not benefit from surgical repair. The leg is best left as is. It remains functional, causes her no pain, helps with balance, allows her to scratch, and—most importantly—does not slow her down at all. As Noelle continues to recover and build strength in that leg, it will likely become barely noticeable. Noelle is a special soul with a story that proves second chances are real. She’s ready to bring joy, loyalty, and laughter to a family who sees her for who she truly is — a happy, capable, loving young Lab with a heart full of gratitude and a future full of promise. If you’re looking for a dog who will adore you, make you smile daily, and remind you that miracles come in all shapes and sizes, Noelle is your girl. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
