round him. Found in a ditch on the side of a road in Texas just before Christmas, Elroy had a rough start, but you’d never know it from his joyful spirit and enthusiasm for life. He loves chewing on sticks and outdoor “treasures,” so he’ll thrive in a home that provides plenty of safe chew toys and guidance as he grows. Check out this cute video of him having a great time with a stuffie! Elroy is happiest being close to his people and is often right under your feet, eager to be part of whatever’s happening. He’s super eager to please and incredibly smart—he learned sit in just 24 hours using kibble and is already working on down. He’s nearly fully crate trained with the word kennel and happily sleeps in his crate with a toy and blanket. His crate is also his safe space; he’ll go there on his own when he’s overwhelmed or ready for a nap, though he prefers other dogs give him space around it. He’s fully potty trained and does a great job letting his people know when he needs to go out. Elroy does experience some separation anxiety and can howl for about 20–30 minutes after his humans leave, so a home without shared walls would be best. Once settled, he does well, but he’ll need patience and continued support as he builds confidence. Physically, Elroy is about 50 pounds already—tall, lanky, and heavier than he looks. His coarser coat, shorter tail, and almost webbed paws suggest he may have some pointer in him. He loves eating snow, soaking up behind-the-ear scratches, and giving “hugs” by leaning in. And yes—he will absolutely sit in your lap like a lap dog if you let him. With consistency, training, and lots of love, Elroy Jetson is ready to blast off into a home that will help him grow, learn, and thrive. Elroy Jetson is from Texas. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.* If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
