per is estimated to be around 2 years old, and he has won all of our hearts with his sweet and sensitive personality. He bonds strongly with his people and is happiest when he can be curled up in someone's lap or follow you around the house. Cooper weighs about 10lbs. Cooper came to us from a local shelter after he was found as a stray. He was in horrible condition when he came in. He was skin and bones and covered in severely matted fur. He was fully shaved down when he was neutered, and his sweet personality began to shine. Unfortunately, while he was at the shelter, he came down with an intense respiratory infection. After weeks of TLC and antibiotics, he is all healed and oh-so ready to have a fresh start with his fur-eever family. Cooper has blossomed in foster care, and we have learned that he is a goofy, playful guy. He loves playing with his toys and romping around with the other young, small dog in his foster home. He definitely is a velcro dog who loves to be around people, so he would do best with a family that doesn't have to leave him alone for long or often. He is such a cuddle bug and loves to get cozy with his foster parents or foster sister. He enjoys his walks and sunbathing, but is the type of dog who enjoys life mostly indoors. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but is quick to warm up and invite himself onto your lap for attention. Cooper loves his playful foster sister, so we think he would do best with a doggie sibling in his new home so that he always has someone to cuddle and romp around with. We haven't seen Cooper around cats, but we think he could do well with a slow introduction. Cooper could be a great addition to a family with kids 7 years and older. Cooper is housetrained using a dog door. He is used to being kept in a room with one of his doggie foster sisters when his foster parents are gone for short periods, so he will need time to acclimate to being left for longer periods. Cooper will require regular professional grooming to upkeep his constantly growing fur. His new family should be prepared to pay for routine grooming sessions to maintain his curly fur and prevent matting. Cooper is such an amazing little guy, and he is going to make someone very lucky. If you think that is you, submit an application today! Cooper's adoption fee is $400. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
