al lost & found group: a young Husky was trying her best to get into the neighborhood Aquatic Center. This sweet girl clearly knew she needed help, and thanks to some kind neighbors, she was safely contained and brought to Animal Control. When no owner came for her, we did. Portia is not quite a year old and came to us far too skinny, but she’s already putting on healthy weight and her coat is transforming beautifully. She’s a sweet, silly, food‑motivated girl who can be a little shy at first, but it doesn’t take long before she’s leaning in for affection. Portia enjoys playing with other dogs—male or female—but she is a dominant female. She’ll thrive in a home where any resident dog won’t challenge her, or she’d be perfectly happy as an only dog. Because she’s sensitive to a lot of over-activity, we’re recommending a home that doesn't have young children. Too much commotion can overwhelm her. When left alone, Portia is a dream. She self‑entertains, snoozes, or happily works on her Benebones. She’s fully housebroken, does well in a kennel, and isn’t destructive. She’s not a fan of having her paws wiped and will hop around like a little kangaroo to avoid it, but she ultimately tolerates all handling. Her biggest hurdle right now is her fear of passing cars on walks. For that reason, her ideal home would have a yard for her to enjoy or quiet walking trails that aren’t right next to busy roads. This sweet girl is ready to be someone’s loyal companion. She saved herself once—now she’s hoping someone will choose her forever. Portia is located in Maryland. A meet‑and‑greet is recommended for applicants who already have dogs in the home. Her adoption area is NJ, DE, PA, MD, VA - nearby states to these considered on a case by case basis. We do not have a facility in which you can visit. We find this a huge benefit because we learn our dogs and are able to educate our adopters on what it’s like to have them live in your home. Part of our process, once pre-approved, is to speak with the foster for the dog you’re interested in. If you’re still interested in adopting from our rescue the first step is to complete our adoption application online at .huskyrescueteam/apply If you have additional questions please email infohuskyrescueteam

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
