Sweet Pico is a shy little Yorkie Poodle mix with a tender heart and a quiet longing to feel safe. Life has taught him to be cautious, and when he’s unsure, his instinct is to tuck himself away. But give him a soft voice, a baby talk, and patience… and you’ll see something truly special. Pico will slowly come out on his own, head lowered, tail wagging gently, his way of bravely trying again. At just one year old and 7 pounds, Pico is still forming his view of the world. He doesn’t need pressure or expectations, just reassurance, consistency, and kindness. A home with dog experience would be his best match, with someone willing to move at his pace and help him build confidence one loving moment at a time. In the right environment, Pico will blossom into a devoted companion who trusts deeply because he was given the chance to feel secure. Then more of Pico's jovial charm will take over! Pico is hypoallergenic and will need regular monthly grooming to keep his coat healthy and comfortable. More than anything, he needs a family who understands that healing happens gently, and that trust, once earned, is a beautiful gift. If your heart has room for patience, compassion, and quiet victories, Pico may be the little soul meant to grow beside you. This dog's adoption fee is $650 to go towards their vetting (vaccines, spay/neuter, heartworm/Ehrlichia/Lyme test, fecal test, pre-op blood work, dental cleaning, and microchip as well as grooming if needed). If you are interested, please fill out the adoption application. For additional information regarding our adoption process, please check our FAQ's Page. *All dogs in the care of Get a Life Pet Rescue live in loving foster homes while waiting for their perfect match. They don't live in cages or crates (unless there is a medical reason to do so). They are treated as family pets while in our care. * All dogs in our care are fed premium brand holistic food as well as supplements and vitamins specific to each dog's needs. We don't buy inexpensive bulk dry kibble; our rescues are fed premium wet food diets as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program to ensure maximum health. .*All of our rescues receive complete quality vetting, including full dental cleaning with pre-op bloodwork, spay/neuter, vaccines, and grooming. Dogs in need of specialized medicine will be seen by specialists, such as full cardiac workups, ophthalmologist visits, and all suspicious lumps and bumps are biopsied, and every medical need is transparent to potential adopters. *Once you adopt from Get a Life Pet Rescue, you become part of our compassionate family, and we are here for you if a problem with your precious dog arises.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
