ho loves her person and happily soaks up attention and cuddles. She is relatively low-energy and perfectly content to enjoy a short burst of zoomies or playtime before settling in for a long nap. She loves cozy blankets and soft beds and will carefully arrange her bedding into a little nest before getting comfortable. She enjoys playing with toys and is also happy to entertain herself. Lamb Chop plush toys and interactive nesting toys are among her favorites. She can get a little overexcited when she is having fun, but she responds well to correction and redirection and usually just needs a reminder about appropriate behavior. Although Prin is very attached to her person, she has shown no signs of separation anxiety. She is comfortable being left alone and is equally happy staying with someone other than her foster. She is wonderful in her kennel at all times and treats it like her own little bedroom. Prin has no resource guarding issues toward people, although she does exhibit food resource guarding around other dogs. TRAINING Prin is fully crate trained and completely comfortable spending time in her kennel. She is also 100% house trained and has had no accidents in the home, whether crated or loose. She has excellent leash manners and rarely pulls unless she spots a squirrel or rabbit. She has made great progress learning to remain calm when she sees wildlife and is also very good about passing other dogs on walks without reacting. Prin knows "sit", "down", and "kennel", and she patiently waits for her release before eating. She is currently working on learning "place". She is highly food motivated, which makes training fun and rewarding, and she responds well to correction and redirection when she makes a poor choice. Prin also rides beautifully in the car, whether she is crated or riding loose. PEOPLE Prin is incredibly friendly and loves meeting new people. She may take a little extra time to warm up to some men, but patience and a few treats go a long way toward helping her feel comfortable. She is generally great with children, although she appreciates having her personal space respected and may become uncomfortable if unfamiliar people get too close to her face right away. She has no resource guarding issues with people and is an affectionate, loving companion who genuinely enjoys being around her humans. OTHER ANIMALS Prin is somewhat selective about her canine friends. She seems to do well with young dogs, particularly submissive and male dogs, but she does not get along with dominant female dogs. She does very well around other dogs while on walks and has made significant progress remaining relaxed when dogs pass by while she is sitting or waiting. Prin has a high prey drive toward small animals, particularly squirrels and rabbits. She has been okay seeing cats from inside her kennel, but because of her prey drive, she should not be trusted around cats and would do best in a cat-free home. MEDICAL Prin has experienced some seasonal allergy issues when oak trees are present and pollen levels are high. FUN FACTS Prin is a professional napper who believes every soft blanket is an invitation to build a nest. Prin has taken a few swim lessons and discovered that she LOVES swimming! Prin is extremely goofy and may be the least serious dog to ever exist. DOGS: CATS: KIDS: IDEAL FAMILY: If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable buddy who will love you forever, Prin may be your ideal family member! PRIN'S ADOPTION FEE: $150 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on. INTERESTED IN ADOPTING PRIN? Complete an Adoption Application Now! STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER! We're picky about our adopters. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD? They're not for everyone. They take a lot of time, effort, training. They shed year round. They're big. They scare lots of people. They "mouth" and herd. They're usually strong-willed and stubborn. You have to have references and a home visit. If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home? We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone. You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone. A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car. Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into. Gates are opened. Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!! What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes? New baby? Divorce? Moving? How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up? Will you make a lifetime commitment? It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE. Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment? It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply. Have Questions? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
