xed-breed dog with a unique story and an even bigger heart. As a day-old puppy, he was attacked by his mother, and as a result, he lives with neurological deficits that affect his short-term memory. Think 50 First Dates - some things reset, but the love never does. Ryan knows his basic commands and genuinely enjoys learning, especially when food is involved (and yes, he will happily beg for a bite or two). Walks are one of his greatest joys because every outing feels like a brand-new adventure. Familiar routes? Still exciting. New smells? Oscar-worthy. He is playful, affectionate, and also perfectly capable of entertaining himself. He loves to run in the yard, have bursts of play and then, when his brain needs a break, he will head straight to his crate for a nap. His crate is his safe space, and he chooses it willingly. He sleeps there at night and uses it to decompress when he feels overstimulated. Because of his neurological condition, Ryan can struggle to read other dog's body language and may resource guard his personal space. He can become overstimulated more easily than most, which is why he would do best in a calm, predictable home without young children, cats, or other dogs. While he can coexist with another dog, it would need to be a very specific match - one that respects his boundaries and lets him lead when he wants to play or be left alone. Ryan is housebroken, crate trained, and happiest when he is included in family life, lounging nearby, tagging along, or settling in for a cuddle. And cuddles? He's absolutely in. He may forget what happened five minutes ago, but he never forgets how much he loves his people. Much like his namesake, Ryan Reynolds is endlessly lovable, a little quirky, and proof that even with a few extra challenges, you can still steal the show. Ryan will guard food, toys, people, space (from other dogs and children), has not shown this behavior with adult people. We prefer to place him in a child-free homer this reason. Ryan does have some sensory issues, so touching him the wrong way can elicit a "temper tantrum", with his neuro issues, he can have "temper tantrums" as his brain must likely will not develop beyond puppy behaviors so doesn't know how to interact with kids He's very loving and affectionate, a great companion, easygoing with his day-to-day, loves a routine. Ryan is vaccinated, neutered and chipped. His adoption fee is $250 We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
