he was adopted by a well meaning family, but their resident dog and Minnie have not been able to be off leash together in the house. It appears to be because of the energy level and barkiness of the resident dog. Outside on leash, Minnie showed us that she likes the resident dog and wanted to approach him and play, but he has little or no experience with other dogs and didn't seem appropriate with her. When we first met Minnie inside, she was cautious and shy and wouldn't approach us, although she seemed to want to because she chose to not leave the room! With her owner, she was responsive and affectionate and once on leash outside she was instantly more relaxed and affiliative. When we came back inside, she was ready to be friends and allowed petting and handling and for us to see the sweet silly playful girl she is. Minnie is crate trained and mostly housetrained. She is good in the car and does well with being handled. She seemed to be very dog friendly and does not chase cats when she sees them outside on walks. Minnie is a cuddle bug and loves to play with toys. We noticed slight mouthiness while playing with her with her toys, but we believe she is a great candidate for some positive rewards training. She does seem to know 'sit'. This adorable little pit mix is the sweetest girl once she feels comfortable and would most likely do well in a family (owner says she is great with 6 yr old grandson who visits) and with another dog or as the only. Minnie needs a little time to settle in and feel secure but would make a great companion if someone would just give her the chance! Minnie will be brought up to date on vaccines and tested for heartworm. Minnie has been spayed/neutered and has a microchip. Her adoption fee is $450. Adopting a dog is a commitment that will require annual veterinary care at a minimum, training, exercise, enrichment, etc. Pet care is not cheap or easy and adopters should consider the costs, time and training prior to adoption. After all these dogs have been through, they deserve a loving, committed home. CLICK HERE TO FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
