Roscoe #6 | 2-Year-Old Pit Bull Mix | Velcro Boy with a Wiggle Butt Welcome Roscoe is a 60-pound sweetheart who has come a long way from his rough start as a neglected stray. Once malnourished and scared, he’s now a healthy, affectionate pup who absolutely adores his people. A true professional snuggler, Roscoe loves curling into your arm, resting his head on your chest, and relaxing together. He greets his humans like long-lost best friends, complete with an irresistible full-body wiggle when you come home. Playful, goofy, and full of personality, Roscoe loves tug-of-war, fetch with sturdy rubber balls, and any activity that lets him interact with his people. He’s a strong chewer and does best with durable toys. He truly enjoys car rides and rides beautifully in the car, making him a great companion for errands or adventures. He also enjoys walks and hikes in parks and would thrive with an active adopter who likes getting out and doing things together. On leash, he does well with only mild pulling when using a front-clip harness. Roscoe is fully house trained and will let you know when he needs to go out by standing at the door or giving a bark if you’re not nearby. As with any dog, however, he may have an accident or two while adjusting to a new environment, but with consistency and routine, he does very well. Roscoe recently graduated from a board-and-train program and comes with lifetime training support to help set him and his future family up for continued success. He already knows sit and stay and has made great progress with down, shake, and gentle. He is food- and toy-motivated, eager to please, and responds beautifully to structure and positive reinforcement. Roscoe forms deep bonds with his humans and truly shines when he gets to be the center of attention. Given this, he will do best as the only dog in a home with no cats, where he can fully relax, feel secure, and soak up all the love without competition. He is looking for an adult-only home that offers a calm, predictable environment and continued structure. Roscoe deserves a home where he feels safe, secure, and deeply loved. With patience, routine, and ongoing support through his lifetime training, his confidence will continue to grow. In the right home, Roscoe will be an incredibly loyal, snuggly, and joyful companion who gives his whole heart to his person — and never looks back. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
