Walnut is a 5 year old terrier mix. Small in size but full of joy, Walnut is fun loving, cheerful and eager to be part of your world. He thrives on attention and playtime—fetch is a favorite!—but he’s also wonderfully adaptable. When you’re busy with human stuff, Walnut is perfectly content to settle down at your feet, happy just to be near you. He is used to having people home during the day, and does not do well if left alone for long periods. Since he is a very people-centric dog, an adopter who works from home or is home most of the time will be the best fit for him. This good boy comes with excellent house manners and is crate trained. He knows basic commands like sit and stay. He has been trained not to race out of the door for a walk, but to allow you to go out first. He is very alert and will bark if anyone comes to the house. Walnut will respect his boundaries like staying off certain furniture or waiting patiently by the dinner table during mealtimes. He listens well to a calm, confident leader. He's not food- or toy-aggressive. Walnut is a good walker on leash, though a bit on the toddling, slow side. He does not need a fenced yard and is used to walks. He loves his twice daily 30-minute walks plus a few short ones to do his business. Walnut would be an ideal companion for a single adopter who wants a devoted sidekick. He has been a one-person dog although he might learn to do well in a family setting with older kids if given a good initial effort at socialization to help him feel comfortable in new situations. He has not been exposed to living with cats or other dogs. One delightful bonus? Walnut has been spotted standing on his back legs just to get a better look at something—an impressive little feat that hints he could be a natural for agility training or other fun, confidence-building activities. The video shows him searching for food hidden in a blanket! Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants ideally should live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore prefer applicants that live within an hours drive of Cary NC. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
