ouse-Trained: In progress Crate-Trained: Yes (should be crated until fully housebroken) Good with Dogs: Yes – loves dogs of all sizes Good with Cats: Not tested Good with Kids: Not tested Energy Level: Medium to High (active bursts 3x daily) Fence Required: Yes Special Traits: Lightning-fast zoomies, squeaky yawn, toy and chew enthusiast Why You’ll Love Turbo: Adorable squeaky yawn that will melt your heart Loves dogs and plays beautifully while respecting boundaries Toy and chew obsessed (in the best way!) Equal parts speedy athlete and couch companion Sweet, shy, and submissive personality About Turbo’s Breed: Terrier mixes are often intelligent, energetic, and playful companions. They thrive with engagement, structure, and consistent guidance. With proper outlets for their energy, they make incredibly loyal and entertaining family members who love both activity and downtime. Turbo’s Story & Personality: Turbo earned his name honestly — this boy is fast! When he gets into the yard with a ball, he turns into a little rocket. He absolutely loves toys and chews and looks forward to his active play sessions about three times a day. His most energetic time is early morning, with additional afternoon and evening play sessions lasting around an hour. Despite his speedy side, Turbo is also content to hang out on the couch and relax with his people. He’s shy and submissive when first meeting adults and can be slightly nervous at first, but once he feels safe, his sweet personality shines through. He does wonderfully with other dogs of all sizes. He respects boundaries, enjoys playing, and happily cuddles up afterward. He could thrive in a home with other dogs, but would also do well as an only dog with proper enrichment. Turbo is crate trained and still working on house training. He should continue to be crated until fully housebroken. He currently eats best when someone is in the room with him, as it helps him feel secure. One important note: he should not engage in active toy play immediately after eating, as he can get overexcited and may vomit. Leash training will require patience and dedication. Turbo currently shuts down on leash, and treats have not yet been effective motivation. He is also uncomfortable wearing a collar at this time. Because of this, a securely fenced yard is absolutely essential so he can safely exercise while leash skills are being developed gradually and positively. And perhaps the most charming detail of all — when Turbo yawns, he makes the tiniest squeaky sound. It’s completely adorable and impossible not to smile at. Turbo’s Ideal Home: Securely fenced yard (required) Patient adopter committed to extensive leash training Plenty of toys and chews for enrichment A calm, understanding household Possibly another friendly dog, though not required Ready for a Little Speedster with a Soft Heart? Turbo may be speedy on his feet, but he’s tender at heart. With patience, structure, and love, this sweet boy will blossom into a loyal, playful, and devoted companion. Comprehensive details are provided in the dog's description. To ensure a smooth process, please submit a completed application through our website at: crisisdogsnc/dog-adoption/. Please note that questions via email or social media channels may not receive a response without a completed application. As part of our commitment to responsible adoption practices, we require excellent veterinarian references and conduct virtual home visits. Additionally, your prior or current dog must be on year-round heartworm prevention. We assist with coordinating transportation by both land and air whenever feasible. All assessments regarding breed and age are conducted by licensed veterinarians. We look forward to assisting you in finding your perfect canine companion!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
