of his trusted people. He is currently fostered in Pflugerville, TX, and local or nearby adopters are preferred. Nemo is a true couch potato at heart. He enjoys a nice walk, some time in the backyard, and then he is perfectly content to settle in for a long nap. His energy level is low to moderate — happy to participate, but equally happy to relax for the rest of the day. One of his sweetest habits is resting his head gently on the bed to ask permission to come up and cuddle. If invited, he will happily curl up right next to you — or directly on top of you if given the chance. He lives successfully with two Australian Cattle Dogs (one male, one female) and does very well with other dogs. He enjoys playful but gentle interactions and will often get down to their level and crawl around during playtime. He would do well in a home with other balanced dogs or as a companion to a single adult. Nemo is potty trained, walks nicely on leash, rides well in the car, knows “sit,” and is muzzle trained. He is crate trained with guidance — he can be difficult to convince to enter the crate and is not very food motivated, but once inside he settles appropriately. He responds best to calm handling, consistency, and predictable routines. Temperament is extremely important to note. Nemo is very skittish and has significant “stranger danger.” He can be reactive and has shown defensive aggression toward unfamiliar people and some adult males. He has bitten a veterinary technician without clear warning signs. Because of this, he requires an experienced, patient adopter who understands canine body language, will implement structured, slow introductions, and is committed to managing his environment responsibly. Once he trusts someone — which can happen within one or two positive sessions — he becomes deeply loyal, affectionate, and devoted. He has not lived with children. While he has not shown aggression toward children seen from a distance, he would only be appropriate for a home with older children (12+) who understand boundaries. He would not be suitable for homes with small children or frequent visitors. Nemo has seen cats at the vet and shown curiosity without aggression. With proper introductions, he may be able to live with a dog-savvy cat, though this would need to be carefully managed. Medical: Nemo is currently heartworm positive and undergoing treatment. He is also healing from a significant laceration to his left lateral hip that extended into the muscle. He has undergone surgery and is recovering well; the wound is nearly sealed and does not appear to bother him. Full medical details will be discussed with approved adopters. Additional note: Nemo is exceptionally slobbery — even by Great Dane standards. His adopter must be comfortable with generous amounts of drool. Nemo’s ideal home is calm, structured, and predictable, with minimal exposure to new people. He would do well in a home with a yard but could also thrive in a quieter, smaller living environment with the right person. He needs an experienced owner who will respect his sensitivities, manage introductions carefully, and continue confidence-building at his pace. For the right adopter, Nemo will be an incredibly loyal, affectionate companion who simply wants long walks, long naps, and to be close to his person. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
