once estimated Harpy at around 4 years old. Not because of his teeth. Because of his attitude. Plot twist: he’s probably closer to 1–2 years old and was apparently just going through a very intense ✨ rough chapter ✨. Let’s review the lore. Size: 7 lbs Translation: portable, carry-on sized demon Age: Young-ish Emotionally ancient in the shelter, youthful gremlin in foster Vision: Significantly impaired, but not completely blind (congenital corneal edema -- cosmetic issue) Harpy operates primarily on vibes, confidence, and audacity Vet visits: Spicy Especially when thermometers are involved, which honestly feels fair Harpy was previously adopted into a loud, busy home with lots of children and animals. He lasted one night. Then he briefly became Linda Blair. Back in his foster home in Sacramento? COMEDY GOLD. Harpy’s foster family reports that he: ✔ Loves his humans, visitors, three dogs, and two cats ✔ Is obsessed with toys ✔ Insists on participating in absolutely everything ✔ LOVES walks ✔ Lives for mealtime ✔ Uses pee pads and goes potty outside ✔ May have an accident if access to both is denied because apparently he is not a magician ✔ Provides constant chiweenie commentary on household affairs ✔ Sleeps completely buried under blankets ✔ Crawls into clean laundry and creates near-death experiences for unsuspecting humans ✔ Sleeps belly-up and entirely without modesty Car rides require commentary. Lots of it. Unless he is sitting in foster dad’s lap. Apparently that solves everything. Medically, Harpy has corneal edema that causes significant vision impairment. It is not currently painful and does not require eye drops. And now for the most important update from the foster files: Harpy has been back in his foster home for several weeks. Since returning? ZERO signs of possession. No exorcisms. No holy water. No rotating heads. The demon era appears to be over. ➡️ For now. What Harpy does need is a home that understands that scared dogs sometimes make bad first impressions. We do NOT recommend a home with young children. Older, calm, dog-savvy children who can respect his space and allow him time to decompress may be perfectly fine. The same rule applies to adults, because some grown humans also cannot resist immediately grabbing something this freaking adorable. (Guilty.) Harpy needs people who will let him come to them, learn the household, and realize he is safe before expecting him to perform. Meet him where he feels comfortable and hilarious — not frightened and defensive — and you’ll get to see the real Harpy experience. If you are open to loving a formerly possessed demon trapped inside the body of a Toy Story Slinky, send us an email. Harpy is ready to steal your blankets, your clean laundry, your snacks if given the opportunity, and eventually your heart. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
