dogs, please see HERE Age: ~ 10 years (as of 2/18/26) Weight: 50 lbs (as of 2/18/26) This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Meet Lady Bird, a charming senior dog with a heart full of love. Despite her deafness, she remains spirited and joyful. Lady Bird is the epitome of a well-behaved companion, boasting traits like friendliness, independence, playfulness, intelligence, sweetness, and gentleness. She is a smart lady that is house trained, crate trained, and walks great on the leash. Lady Bird is a pleasant co-exister with other dogs; she prefers dogs stay out of her personal space and not try to engage her in play, and would prefer not to live with puppies or playful dogs. She still has some spunk and can be playful - she just prefers to interact with toys and humans! Due to her mostly deafness, she can also be startled easily, so a low-key household with predictable movements/noises would be best for her. She enjoys her playtime as much as her quiet moments and is adept at communicating her needs and wants in her unique way. Adopting Lady Bird means welcoming a treasure trove of love and loyalty into your home, ready to enrich your life with her serene and joyful spirit. Lady Bird’s story: Lady Bird and her buddy, Paul (coming to SOS soon) has quite the story! They were in a house fire in Wagoner, Oklahoma. There were five dogs that escaped the fire. The oldest daughter of the homeowners surrendered the animals to rescues. Paul had burns on the back of his body and Lady Bird had smoke inhalation. They are in separate foster homes and thriving - they are now healthy and ready to find new forever homes - either together or apart. Medical Note: Lady Bird is mostly deaf; she can hear shrill very loud noises but can't hear the dogs around her. Due to this, she can be startled, so making visual contact before touching her is recommended to help promote a sense of trust and safety (she has never show aggression towards people - this is just a good rule of thumb with deaf dogs). An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
