German Shepherd Dog Dogs For Adoption in West Sacramento, CA, USA

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. A few weeks ago, we welcomed a litter of seven 6-week-old puppies (6 girls and 1 boy) into our care. All of them had upper respiratory infections and had already been r

eceiving doxycycline at the shelter. Each puppy required a second round of antibiotics after the initial seven-day treatment. Fortunately, they were spared from strep zoo during their stay at the shelter, despite their compromised immune systems due to the respiratory infections. As a preventive measure, they also received an antibiotic shot because the shelter had closed due to a strep zoo outbreak. We held our breath for 10 days and were relieved when none of the puppies showed signs of strep zoo, ensuring the safety of our resident dogs as well. The puppies were placed in pairs in foster homes, and each one has visited the vet for their 8-week check-ups, boosters, deworming, and preventative care. All are now healthy, adorable little bundles of joy. Thanks to the dedicated shelter staff and volunteers, the puppies received excellent care during their time at the shelter, where they grew and weaned from their mother before arriving in our care. The mother has since been adopted through the shelter. When the entire litter arrived, they were fully weaned and happily enjoying softened kibble mixed with canned food, which is typical for 6-week-olds. Despite having runny noses and congestion from the upper respiratory infection, their appetites remained strong. They were happy, brave pups with outgoing, social personalities. In their foster homes, they have continued to thrive as playful pups full of mischief and love. Now that they are 9 weeks old, they are ready to find their forever homes. Freyah, Siggy, Echoe, Saige, and Konna were initially fostered together as we onboarded their next foster homes. They were adorable with the two resident dogs and cat, and their foster's young relatives. Echoe and Saige left for their next foster home first, followed by Freyah and Siggy a few days later. We are so grateful for fosters who can say yes to a large litter of puppies with short notice, giving us the time to onboard their next foster homes with all the supplies to raise puppies. Freyah and Siggy, two of the puppies, are currently living with three resident dogs in their foster home and are enjoying plenty of outings with their experienced fosters. Freyah has an all-black face and wears a rainbow-pink collar, while Siggy has tan eyebrows, a shorter coat, and sports a red collar with a leaf pattern. Freyah is the larger puppy, known for her rough-and-tumble approach to play and her outgoing personality with people. She is definitely an attention seeker. Freyah is a busy pup and prone to a few more potty accidents in the house, although she has mastered the doggy door. She likes to make the rules, vocalizes more, and gets excited during car rides. We are looking to find them homes with individuals who are experienced with German Shepherds and can provide the time and resources necessary for training, positive environmental exposure, and the structure German Shepherds need to thrive and develop into well-balanced companions. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
