f fun, adventure and love to give your family. Second, I am your typical lovable, goofy, high energy boy - always having to be where the action is ... even if there is no action whatsoever. I guess that is why Private Foster Mom recommends no cats nor small dogs because I have to always be where they are, even if they don't want me to; I don't see any reason why I can't follow them wherever they go to ensure they are following the rules, but she says that cats and some dogs prefer their privacy. Why she also recommends that my forever family would best be one that either already has a boxer or had one previously, so that they are fully on board with what I am! The next best home would be one with another high energy dog who could keep up with my goofiness. Third, I know I would love a family who is as adventurous as me, but who can also provide me with some structure as I can be a little too much with people too. I just like to jump up to say Hi and do a sniff inspection, but not everyone likes that. Why Private Foster Mom also recommends that my best chance for success would be with a family that has older children and who are as active as I am - no young children or Senior Citizens who might find my boisterousness to be a little off-putting. Fourth, I do require at least 2 walks each day, but they don't have to be long - just enough to help with my energy level. I also am pretty good on a walk - I do get excited when I see other people, especially if they have dogs too, but Foster Mom is working on this and she believes that socialization, training, and structure will help me get better. Fifth, like any good soldier, I do know some Commands - Sit, Down, Wait/Stay and Leave It - I even sit and wait for each meal when I am asked. I do have a food allergy that PFM is dealing with by putting me on a raw diet - I know, I LOVE IT, and since being with her, some of my hair has started to come back, so Bonus right?!! Hope you will find me as absolutely wonderful as I find myself! Located in Chatham

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
