me of our dogs, please see HERE Age: 9 mos. (as of 2-26-26) Weight: 15 lbs. (as of 2-26-26) This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Give a big hug to little Sheba! Sheba is the kind of pup who slips into a new forever home so naturally that you forget she hasn’t been there all along. This petite tan‑and‑black Shiba/Rat Terrier mix is playful, outgoing, and wonderfully intelligent — a feisty little companion who loves a nice lap just as much as a good squeaky toy. Sheba has a brother named Manook who is also available for adoption right here at SOS. Whether she’s playing with other dogs, exploring the yard, or waiting patiently for her morning walk, Sheba brings energy and confidence to every activity. She’s social and outgoing, but not demanding; playful, but not chaotic. Her sweet personality is a hit with men and women, young and old, and she gets along beautifully with dogs of all sizes. Sheba and her littermates have spent the past nine months in quiet settings with plenty of yard space, so a compact, urban space might require some adjustment, but Sheba's warm, winning attitude would thrive in almost any situation. She's still working on mastering leash walking skills, but Sheba's perfectly content, quiet and clean in a crate for up to eight hours. Like many young dogs, she’s also still learning basic household manners like sharing and teamwork, but she responds well to gentle corrections and structure. Generally, she’s an easygoing house guest who loves cuddles as much as playtime. She’s happy to chill when you’re busy and delighted to join in when you’re not. And she's waiting to meet you! Note on Sheba Shiba: This pup enjoys being around other dogs, both in play and as a friendly coexister. She does best if fed and given high value food separately from other dogs as we have noticed some mild resource guarding, which is a common breed trait in Shiba Inus (what we believe to be her breed mix). An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
