Update 3/6/26 from Petunia's foster family: "We have had Petunia for a few weeks. She lives in a house with a family that has two boys (ages 7 and 9). Petunia is crate and potty trained. She likes kids and dogs of all sizes although she can take a few minutes to warm up. She likes to play tug of war (she's very strong for 18lbs), she loves playing with stuffie toys, and is a happy, funny, silly girl. She does not require more than two 20 min walks a day and is otherwise overall chill, minus her zoomies. She likes to cuddle and while she sleeps in a crate, she prefers cuddling in bed. She's working on doing walks and seeing other dogs without barking at them, but she has a little ways to go on that. She is very social though. She really would do well as a second dog or with someone that can get lots of dog playdates in for her as she thrives with dog social time." Original Rescue Story: This cutie is a baja mutt. rescued as a stray in Ensenada, Mexico. She resembles a chi but she is bigger than a small chi hence we think she is a terrier (small breed terrier) and Chi mix. Basically an over grown chihuahua! ha ha We can say she is not your typical chi though! She LOVES dog friends, she loves humans and is a huge extrovert who does well with cats too! She may be a small breed under 20 pounds but at a hefty 17 pounds she is small but durable and excellent walking and hiking companion who enjoys being the life of the party playing with all dog friends, she is VERY flirty with the larger breeds and one of her good friends are Gia and Red BUT she also adores playing with smaller breeds. She matches persoanlities and a great dog if you are looking for a buddy for a resident home. She also entertains herself very well with toys tossing them around loves to grab toys. As of late February she is fostered in San Diego with a family who has young children in elementary grade and adores them, they adore her too. She is used to being fostered in a home with multiple dogs but has being doing well as an only dog. She is crate trained and once she settles in a new environemnt catches pretty quickly on house training with minimal accidents. She is not a huge barker BUT she is still a small breed dog which barking comes with the territory of small dogs. The level will depend on her new humans and how they train and correct ei do NOT allowe her to bark and she won't or at least will keep to minimum its all about structure from day ONE in a new home. She will be a great dog for almost all applicants from retirees to family with kids or working adults as long as will keep her entertained and meet her energy requirements, she is small and loves to cuddle and be a couch potato but also loves to rump around with friends and run or play around. She is a healthy dog who has an apt in mid March to be spayed (the only thing left to do since that is when vet clinic has openings) anyone interested in adopting before she is spayed can do so NOW but needs to be local to san diego to be able to drop her off to her spay apt or ARWOB volunteers can also help coordinate transport to and from the vet clinic in san diego (spay is incuded with her adoption fee of course) Submit an application to meet this beauty today! She has a great personality! If you would like to meet one of our animals, PLEASE fill out an adoption application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
