Meet Marlee: The World-Class Companion (No Hiking Required) If your version of a "big adventure" is moving from the desk to the couch, Marlee is the girl you’ve been waiting for. Marlee is a gentle, senior soul who has mastered the art of being near you. She doesn’t need a palace or a marathon; she just needs to know where your feet are so she can lay on top of them. Marlee is a distinguished lady with good manners. She is fully house-trained and has a unique way of communicating—if she needs to go out while you’re napping, she’ll gently grab your foot and give it a gentle nudge to let you know. She isn't a furniture jumper; she’s perfectly content with her paws on the floor and her head in your lap for her favorite thing in the world: head scratches. Her Ideal Retirement Home: Because Marlee is a "vintage" model, she has a few specific requests for her forever home: No or not many stairs. Marlee’s hips aren't as young as they used to be, so a home with very few steps (or a ramp) is a must, as even two steps can be a struggle for her. We are having her hips looked and have her on a diet to improve the stress on her joints. Rug Enthusiasts Welcome: Hardwood and tile can be slippery for her. She does best in a home with carpeting or plenty of area rugs to help her find her footing. Only-Dog Energy: Marlee prefers to be the queen of her castle. She doesn't care for the high energy of other female dogs and would be happiest as your one-and-only. It is possible she could be ok with a low energy male dog. Early Risers: Marlee is a 5:00 AM girl! If you’re already up for coffee at dawn, she’s the perfect partner to watch the sunrise with. Health & Happiness: Marlee is currently on a "get-fit" journey! She’s a bit curvy and enjoys her specialized diet twice a day to help take the pressure off her joints. While she moves slowly, she still loves a "perimeter check" of the yard to make sure everything is safe. On her very best days, she’ll even break out her favorite Christmas toy for a little celebratory play. Marlee is looking for a quiet home with someone who is around often—a retiree or a work-from-home professional would be her absolute dream. Marlee deserves to spend her golden years in a loving home that is committed to her until the end. She has a lot of love to give. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
