Boxer Rescue. I hope I get to thank him one day. Well, enough about that. I'm Zio! I'm so handsome I can't stand it! I'm a young guy, which means all that boxer energy loves to explode! When that happens, I run like a gazelle, I try really hard not to run into things, like my little foster brother, so I leap into the air to jump over him. My foster mom wants to get a video of me doing it, but I'm too quick. I don't mind the crate too much. My foster parents stick me in there when they leave and at night. I whine a little bit, but then I get so cozy I just fall asleep. I don't potty in my crate, I can hold it all night long! Speaking of pottying, ok, so I had ONE, count them, ONE, accident in the house since I have been here. That's it, see, I told you I was smart! (or did I?) I learned about the doggie door in the first hour I was in my foster home! That thing is cool! I can go out whenever I want and potty where my foster brothers and sister potty, so I don't do it in the house! I love other dogs; it's so much fun to play with them. My foster sister is kind of a grouch, so I leave her alone. No one wants to mess with her; she thinks she's a Queen. (my eyes are rolling) I haven't met cats, but listen, I said I was smart, I'll respond to commands if you teach me, but those cats better look out for my paws, cuz I'm a boxer and I like to box! Kids, well, I haven't met them, but I'm sure I would love them. I will jump on them and knock them down, so please understand that. I'm just a young guy who needs proper guidance when it comes to human siblings. I hope they have shoes, cuz I love shoes. I will try to keep you from tying them and putting them on, then I'll do everything I can to keep you from walking in them. My foster mom says this behaviour has to stop, but it's funny to see her try to walk while I try to grab her feet. Small kids probably won't like me doing that...just sayin. I like the leash, I'm pretty good on it. I know I need more practice. So let's talk about my health. I'm pretty healthy, a little underweight, and they tell me I am heartworm positive. Houston Boxer Rescue(HBR) is treating me as a light positive and keeping me on prevention for a full year before I have to go back to the silly vet's office and get tested again. Will you be my forever family? Transport Fee: Our basic transport fee is $300 for boxers traveling outside of Texas to their new homes in predetermined destinations(East Coast) using a trusted transport company. The transport is based on location and travel time. Note: Transport is not available within Texas or Louisiana.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
