35 lbs, Pepper is a soft, fluffy soul who takes her role as a companion and protector very seriously. While she has the classic Cattle Dog focus, her energy levels are surprisingly manageable; she’s perfectly happy with a few rounds of indoor or outdoor fetch and a nice spot by the window to keep an eye on the neighborhood. Once she’s clocked out of her "security guard" duties for the day, she wants nothing more than to curl up right next to you for some serious snuggle time. Pepper is a loyalist who loves fiercely and totally, which means she prefers to be the center of your world. Because she is a natural protector who becomes instantly devoted to her person and property, she needs to be the only dog in the home. She would be an absolute dream for someone living alone who is looking for a vigilant, devoted best friend. While she is house-trained and a total "pro" at holding it, she isn't much of a communicator, so a consistent routine works best for her. Training & Manners The Great Indoors: Pepper is a model houseguest! She isn't a chewer, doesn't need to be crated when you're gone, and is exceptionally respectful of your furniture (unless she’s barking at her own reflection in the TV!). Just be sure to keep a lid on your trash can, as she’s known to do a little "snack hunting" if left to her own devices. On the Leash: Pepper enjoys her walks but prefers the quiet life. Busy roads with loud cars can be overwhelming for her, and she will let you know with a bark and a lunge. She’ll do best in a quieter neighborhood where she can focus on her handler rather than the traffic. Socialization: Like many Heelers, Pepper is wary of strangers and "scary" noises like phone alarms or thunder. She’ll need a patient family willing to help her socialize and show her that the world isn't quite as suspicious as she thinks it is. Pepper is a "velcro dog" in the truest sense—she will be your shadow, your protector, and your most affectionate friend. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance athlete who doubles as a professional cuddler, Pepper is waiting for you! Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-serve basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Applications may take up to 48 hours to process. All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $200. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
