s as a stray in Minneapolis. I was taken to the shelter, and due to shelter stress found myself on the euthanasia list. That’s when Hope stepped in and I moved to Iowa! I have been in a foster home for about two months now learning how to be a good dog, and now I am ready to find my forever family! I am extremely cuddly and affectionate and love to sit on your lap and cuddle. I sleep well in a crate at night, but I also love sleeping on the bed next to you. Right now, I free roam during the day with supervision (both my foster parents work from home) but I am happy to spend time in either a crate or a closed off room (currently a guest bathroom) while they are gone. I have been working on training and know how to sit, down, climb (place), shake, and do a pretty good job loose leash walking (I have been wearing a prong collar while training)! I am highly treat motivated and do a good job of gently taking treats. I am also cat friendly! I will sometimes follow the resident cat around in my foster home, but my foster mama says I am always a gentleman. Now let’s talk about the things I am still working on. I LOVE playing with toys, but I do like to shred (and ingest) them. I either need only tough toys, or I need my family to watch me and make sure I don’t eat squeakers and fabric. I like to look at things on the counter but am pretty good at the “off command” and I jump up less and less. I get excited and sometimes forget that I have teefers, so my new owners will need to continue to work on bite inhibition with me. I used to nip a little, and now I just accidently make contact when playing sometimes. I am also an attention seeker, and I will sometimes attention bark at you. I am a dog who needs daily exercise or I go a little stir crazy, and I prefer walks over playing in the yard. Because I am still working on some training things, I need an experienced owner who has a training plan for me after adoption. My foster mama says I have made great progress in the last two months and says with some additional time and training I will be the perfect doggy! My foster mama also thinks I should tell you that it took me about 4-6 weeks to become fully comfortable in her home and settle in. She believes that since I will be going from house to house this time (vs from the shelter into the house) it will be better, but my new humans will need to understand that the first month or so might be a little more difficult while I get to know you and the routines. Additionally, while I do have a dominant male dog in the house with me currently, it took some time before we got along and I did not do great in meeting another dominant dog. For that reason, my people think I would do best as the only doggie in the house, or with a more laid-back friend. I may still be a work in progress, but I promise that with a little patience and consistency, I will spend every single day making you glad you chose me. I have already come so far, and with the right family by my side I know the best is still yet to come. Could that family be you? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
