ving and fun girl. She is a gentle soul who loves attention and is learning how to make new friends. She has all the qualities to make her a wonderful companion for someone looking for a moderate-energy and loyal buddy. Ireland is a petite girl and weighs about 18lbs. We think that she will be around 40lbs when fully grown. Ireland was found as a stray in rural Modesto and brought to the local shelter. She came in with her 3 siblings - Fiona, Patrick, and another brother who was adopted from the shelter. Due to overcrowding at the shelter, the puppies found themselves on the euthanasia list. We are so happy to be able to save their lives, and they have been adjusting well to life in foster care. They are looking for individual homes so that they can get the one-on-one training and socialization that they need. Ireland is playful, bashful, and has begun to blossom in foster care. She loves to run around the backyard and play with toys - tennis balls and fluffy toys are her favorite! Ireland is the shyest of the bunch, but with lots of love, she has learned to trust and can't wait to be your new best friend. Ireland is a smart girl who is still working on her basic manners. She needs a family committed to continuing her basic manners training. Ireland has done well living with small and large dogs (her best buddy is the black lab). Due to her shy personality, we think she needs a confident dog in her new home to help mentor her. Ireland has done well living with dog-savvy cats. Ireland could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 10 years and older. Ireland has been doing well with her housetraining, but is still learning. She needs a family who can be patient with her and be consistent with her training to help her succeed. Ireland has done well being left alone for short periods in her crate during the day and sleeping in there through the night. If Ireland sounds like the adorable gal you need in your life, submit an application today! Ireland's adoption fee is $350. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogsyolospca. For more general questions, please see our website at .yolospca.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
