Jake was left to fend for himself, hunting for every meal just to see another sunrise. He lived in the shadows of a threat—that if he wasn't "useful," he wouldn't be allowed to exist at all. When Jake first arrived at the rescue, he was a ghost. No tail wags, no spark, just a stoic survivor who didn't know what a kind hand felt like. It took two months of patience for the "real" Jake to emerge from behind those soulful American Bulldog eyes. And then, the magic happened… Jake met "his" people. For the first time, he traded the hunt for a bowl of brown kibble and a warm bed. He learned that he didn't have to work for his life anymore—he just had to be Jake. • The Neighborhood Hero: He became the dog every kid on the block knew by name. He lived for the sound of children shouting "Jake!" and running to greet him. • The Perfect Houseguest: Despite his rough start, he was a gentleman. Completely housebroken, leash-trained (mostly—those squirrels still remind him of his "roots"!), and a master of the afternoon snooze. Now, through no fault of his own, Jake is back at the rescue. Due to sudden, severe allergies in the home, Jake lost the only peace he’s ever known. He is confused. He keeps looking at the door, waiting for the family that showed him what love was to come back and take him home. He doesn't understand why the soft rugs and neighborhood kids have been replaced by concrete and bars again. What Jake Needs Now: Jake is looking for a "Forever-Forever" home. • A Family to Trust: He has so much love to give; he just needs someone who won't let him go. • A Yard for Squirrel-Watching: He’s a big boy with a big heart who loves his walks. • Gentle Hands: He’s proven he’s amazing with children and is ready to be a loyal protector and playmate once again. Jake has survived the worst of humanity, and he’s tasted the best of it. We can't let him believe that love was just a temporary gift. Will you be the one to tell Jake he never has to worry again? Jake is house broken, crate trained, neutered and up to date on all his vaccines. He is also heartworm negative and microchipped. please submit an adoption application at .arrfnc/info/adoption I am house broken crate trained, neutered and up to date on all my vaccines. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
