is unknown, but her “gotcha day” with her current owners was January 5th, 2019 and that’s the day they use as her birthday. When her loving family brought her home from the shelter, the staff estimated her to be 2-3 yrs old, which puts her at 9-10 yrs old today. Lupe is deeply loved by her current family, who have gone above and beyond to keep her through extremely difficult life circumstances. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the time has come where finding Lupe a new home is the most loving and responsible decision for her. This selfless decision has not been made lightly, and her family hopes to find a home that will love her just as much as they do. We are honored to help them in their search. Lupe is the definition of a people-loving companion. She adores men, women, and children and gets very excited to meet new people. She will likely greet you with a happy jump and lots of enthusiasm, which means she could accidentally knock over small kiddos or someone unsteady on their feet, just know it’s all love and excitement from this sweet girl! Lupe is: • Great with other dogs and cats • Zero aggression of any kind (including food) • Very food-motivated, but gentle; you can even take a bone from her without issue • Potty trained and also comfortable using pee pads • Spayed and healthy, with no known medical issues • Not a big barker • Low shedding Lupe is a pretty low-maintenance gal. She’s not much for toys, but she absolutely loves sleeping on her bed or cuddling up on the couch with her people. Her favorite thing in the world is simply being near the humans she loves. Even though she’s technically a senior, Lupe still has a youthful spirit and plenty of love to give. One thing she doesn't love are thunderstorms, which can scare her. And now for Lupe’s most famous feature… She has the most adorable marking on her backside that looks exactly like an elephant head, with her tail forming the trunk spraying water! (You’ll have to see the photo to believe it!) If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate, people oriented dog who just wants to share the couch and your heart, Lupe might be the perfect match. Please note: Penny is not currently in rescue. We are courtesy posting for her Foster to help her find the perfect home. If you are interested in learning more about Penny or meeting her, please fill out this application and we will work with her Foster to get you contacted! bit.ly/3GDeyyo

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
