came from the same breeder and shared the same difficult start in life. Corkie is a 6-month-old Whoodle who spent his entire life in a kennel before rescue. He arrived unsocialized, unsure of people, and unfamiliar with the world outside his enclosure. Even with that start, he is sweet, gentle, submissive, and friendly once he begins to trust. He currently weighs about 24 lbs and is expected to be around 35 lbs as an adult. Corkie is less scared than Chester. He will slowly approach for treats, and once he begins to trust, he will offer gentle kisses and seek quiet affection. He still needs patience, but he warms up at a steady, encouraging pace. He loves other dogs, but he does best with a dog his size or smaller. Large dogs overwhelm him. A confident, friendly dog around his size helps him feel safe and supported. He will run from you at first. This is not dislike; he simply has not learned what kindness feels like. With time, he will quietly curl up on your lap and relax into you. Trust takes time, and he needs an adopter who understands slow, gentle progress. He is not leash-trained and will not walk on a leash at this stage. A secure, fully fenced yard is required. He is a flight risk and will not come back if he slips away, so doors, gates, and transitions must be handled carefully. He cannot be crated. An approved puppy pen is required. The pen should be placed in your living room or another area where you spend time so he can observe you and slowly get used to your presence. He is familiar with a pen, and it helps him feel safe. We will tell you which type of pen to use upon approval. We offer a 10-day trial adoption to ensure Corkie is a good fit for your home and resident dog. Adopter must live within 1 hour of Crown Point. Corkie is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. Adoption fee: $395. The adoption fee is $600 if you wish to adopt both boys together. They will still benefit from having another friendly dog in the home, however, as a companion. ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS: • Must live within 1 hour of Crown Point • Fenced-in yard required (no invisible fences) • Someone home during the day • Children 13+ • Calm, patient household • Friendly resident dog his size or smaller strongly preferred • No crates — approved puppy pen required • Experience with shy or unsocialized dogs is a plus

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
