e can coordinate with his foster. Hank is a gentle soul who is doing his very best to navigate shelter life, even though this environment feels overwhelming for him. His previous owner shared that one of Hank’s biggest fears was going to the vet, and we imagine the shelter carries many of those same unfamiliar sounds, smells, and stressors—making it understandably difficult for him to fully relax right away. Even so, Hank is trying hard every day, and behind that shy exterior is a truly sweet dog who just needs patience and kindness to feel safe. In a home setting, Hank is described as gentle, snuggly, and playful—a boy who forms deep bonds once he learns to trust. He may take a little time to warm up to new people, but when he does, you gain a loyal companion who simply wants to be close to his people. Hank is wonderfully well-mannered and that has already shown through, even here in the shelter. He is potty trained and will quietly wait at the door when he needs to go outside. He is also crate trained and is comfortable spending a few hours each day in his crate. Like many clever dogs, he may occasionally try to sneak a snack from the counter if given the opportunity! He walks nicely on leash and knows an impressive list of cues including sit, stay, down, shake, off, treat, and no—showing that he has a great foundation and enjoys working with his person. The busy shelter environment can sometimes be overstimulating for Hank, especially with all the barking around him, but in calmer, more controlled settings he has been happy to meet other dogs and has not shown reactivity. For any potential canine housemates, we are always happy to arrange a dog meet and greet to help ensure a good fit. Hank does have a tendency to chase cats, so he should not go to a home with cats or other small animals. When he does feel playful, Hank’s joy really shines—he loves toys of all kinds, and once he feels comfortable, his playful side begins to come alive. Like so many sensitive dogs, Hank struggles to fully show his true personality in the shelter. The stress here can make even the very best dogs seem quieter or more uncertain than they truly are. Hank is a good boy—one who deserves patience, understanding, and the chance to settle in at his own pace. Given that time, we believe he has so much love to give.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
