20. Something happened to her, we dont know what. However, it left her so devastatingly injured, she lost her 2 back legs. Although Cola has 2 legs, she lives her life the way she wants- unhindered. She spends her days running around, sunbathing, and being the lively self she is. Cola's story is defined by resilience, joy, and an unbreakable spirit. Cola joined Twenty Paws Rescue in March 2023. Her journey quickly captured hearts, with her story shared widely on social media and in national outlets such as People and Newsweek. For nearly two years, Cola waited patiently for a forever home, charming everyone she met with her sweet nature and playful personality. In December 2024, Cola was finally adopted, but sadly, the placement was not the right fit. Through no fault of her own, she was returned to rescue care, where she has once again shown her resilience and ability to thrive with the right support. She is currently doing well in a foster home that understands her needs, continues to help her build confidence, and keeps her active. Cola is affectionate, people-loving, and eager to connect. She enjoys attention, cuddles, and being part of daily life, and she has a playful, energetic side that shines through in her social media videos and stories. She navigates her environment with impressive agility, handles steps, and loves exploring. While she has a custom 3D-printed wheelchair available, she often prefers moving independently, demonstrating just how capable she is. But she’s working to train on the wheels. She is fully vetted, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and in good health. She’s currently 30 lbs but working to get back down to 25. Cola benefits from joint and muscle support supplements and does best in a calm, patient environment. She would thrive in a home that understands her past, celebrates her strength, and is committed to giving her the love and stability she deserves—whether as an only pet or with compatible companions. Cola’s story is a powerful reminder that joy is not defined by physical ability, but by heart. She continues to inspire everyone who meets her, and she is still waiting for the forever family who will see her not for what she’s lost, but for everything she is. Cola is a warm hearted girl and just adores people. She will flourish best with a family that is understanding of her past and would help her live life with utmost freedom, spirit, and love. Cola is completely healthy and ready for a family! If interested in adopting Cola, please complete an application, which can be found on our website at .twentypawsrescue/forms-applications. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
