foster family (: Bobo has been with us for over a month now, making him one of our longer-term residents—and while we’ve loved getting to know him, shelter life is starting to wear on this sweet boy. He’s ready for a home of his own where he can finally relax and be loved how he deserves! Bobo came to us because he was a little too big and active for his previous senior owner, but don’t let his size fool you—this gentle giant has a soft heart and a willingness to learn that’s truly special. He takes treats so gently, responds beautifully to redirection, and genuinely enjoys training. With a bit of structure and guidance, Bobo is going to absolutely thrive. He’s potty trained, keeps his space nice and clean, and knows cues like “sit” and “down.” He may even be crate trained, as he settles nicely in his kennel and seems to appreciate having a cozy, safe space of his own. Bobo is a strong boy and still working on his leash manners, so he’ll do best with a capable handler who can continue helping him build those skills. He’s been doing great with a harness lead and is learning “wait” with positive reinforcement—he’s already making great progress! Personality-wise, Bobo is the best mix of sweet and silly. He’s been friendly with everyone he’s met, loves making new friends, and his soft eyes paired with his goofy moments make him impossible not to love. Bobo doesn’t have a ton of experience with other animals and can feel overwhelmed in busy dog environments, though he hasn’t shown aggressive behaviors, he would likely do best as the only dog in the home. He’ll benefit from slow, thoughtful introductions and continued positive experiences. Bobo does not have much experience with other animals. While in our care, Bobo has bravely tried all sorts of new things—car rides, trail walks, even some agility-style play! He may still be figuring it all out, but he’s never afraid to give it a try, and that says so much about his character. Bobo will thrive best with having a positive outlet for his energy. He is the type of dog who appreciates keeping both his mind and body moving! Bobo is truly such a good boy. He’s loyal, loving, and ready to give his whole heart to someone. Now he just needs that someone to give him a chance!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
