ion. My first stop was animal control, where they began getting me the vetting and good care I needed. Then Mostly Mutts stepped up and – while it has taken a while to get me into good shape, I am now ready to meet my new family and live the good life all doggies deserve. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I am living with other dogs in my foster home, and we get along fine. I basically ignore them, so if you have a nice doggie at home that isn’t looking for a playmate, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / I’d do best in a home with older children who know to be gentle with a tiny, senior girl like me, so let’s meet! • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a pretty quiet girl with a calm and gentle demeanor. I’ve settled into my foster home and like the routine of napping, walking about a bit to explore, collecting some petting, then going for another nap. I do have a curious nature, so I look forward to some short walks with my foster once I’m fully healed from my spay, dental and mammary mass removal. I am friendly and sweet, but not really a cuddle bug/lap dog. Your love and attention are appreciated though! / Energy level: 3-5. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I’m pretty hard of hearing, so I respond better to louder sound commands or a whistle than word commands. My foster gets my attention, taps her leg and I come to her. Mostly Mutts offers free lifetime training classes for all their adopted dogs, so perhaps they will have some good ideas to help a dog that’s hard of hearing – just ask them. / I’m not crated in my foster home, as I stay in a small bathroom at night or when my foster can't keep a close eye on me to encourage me to use my potty pad. / My potty habits are coming along – slowly, but there has been progress. My foster works from home and pays close attention to me when I get up and as soon as I eat. Then, I’ll follow my foster and go outside. Otherwise, I may potty inside. Potty pads are sometimes used, but sometimes I go right beside them. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I’m an affectionate girl who loves ear scratches and belly rubs when I first wake up. I think I’ll enjoy short walks post-surgery as I am curious and like to spend time exploring my surroundings. Though I have some sight limitations, I navigate obstacles and still get around well. Soft treats are a favorite of mine, too – yum! / When it comes to grooming, I don’t like the blow dryer but did well just drying in the sun on a nice day. I’m also not a lap dog, though I am a nice little dog. I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and gentle exercise. I also don’t think I’d want to live in a busy home. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I had a good dental cleaning with 14 teeth removed, so my mouth is healthy again. I also came in with some missing teeth. I’m on an over-the-counter Cosequin tablet that is good for all senior dogs. I had a mass in my mammary chain which has been removed now. I’m receiving medicated baths for a little longer and these can be done in my new home. I’m looking for a great home with a loving family! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
