Our listed dogs ARE READY IMMEDIATELY; we only meet with families WHO ARE READY TO ADOPT! IF YOU APPLY and if WE APPROVE YOU it means we are assuming when you meet any of our dogs and fall in love you're ready to ADOPT AND HIM OR HER Home Dutton is a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd -Collie mix with the kind of gentle, loving personality that makes you fall for him almost instantly. He’s one of those dogs who doesn’t just like people… he really loves them. If given the choice, he’ll happily leave the dog crowd behind just to come sit at your feet and soak up attention. This sweet boy is incredibly smart and already has a great foundation—he knows “sit” and “shake,” and his recall is excellent. Dutton is the kind of dog who wants to be connected to his person, which makes him both easy to work with and a wonderful companion. Dutton does well with other dogs, though he’s still figuring out how to actually play . Right now, he’s more of a polite greeter—he’ll sniff, say hello, and then wander back over to his humans for reassurance and cuddles. It’s clear he hasn’t had much experience just being a carefree dog yet, but with a little time, confidence, and the right environment, we think that playful side is just waiting to come out. Dutton would thrive in a home where he can continue to build confidence, feel safe, and most importantly—be close to his people. Whether that’s lounging next to you on the couch or following you from room to room, he’s happiest when he’s with his person. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, and incredibly sweet companion, Dutton may be your perfect match General Info - PLEASE READ! *Our $450 adoption fee is based on the cost of rescuing, transporting and vetting each dog; we do not try to compete on prices with municipal shelters whose funds are paid by the city. Our philosophy is to rescue highly adoptable dogs, have them live kennel-free in private homes for temperament assessments and individual personalities. We work hard to match EACH dog with the right family - kids or no kids, other dogs male or female and/or cats. With very rare exceptions all dogs over 6 months will be spayed or neutered PRIOR to adoption - dogs under 6 months will include a spay/neuter date AND referral info for lower-cost surgery if the adopter does not choose to use her or his personal vet. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
