rs (mostly decorative… for now ). He’s still learning that the world is a safe place, so what he really needs is a patient, understanding family who will give him the time and space to come out of his shell. Buddy may be shy at first, but once he trusts you, he’ll greet you with a wagging tail like you’ve been gone forever—even if it’s only been a few minutes. He didn’t know much at first about the joys of being a happy indoor dog, but now he is following around his adult foster dog sister - looking to her for guidance and learning from her. Watching him slowly open up has been incredibly rewarding for his foster pawrents. About Buddy: • 2-year-old male beagle mix (neutered) • Loves tossing his toys and playing outside. Evening zoomies become a normal part of the routine once he settles in. • Professional sunbather—will follow the sunshine around the house • Walks well on a leash • Excellent squirrel alert system (he takes this job very seriously) • Enjoys running around the yard and playing chase with his foster sister Training & Progress: • Crate trained overnight (sleeps ~8 hours with no accidents!) • Still building confidence going into the crate independently. He will let you know that he does not enjoy the crate, but after some vocal protesting, he settles down. • Learning house training—does best with a consistent routine. Like any young pup, he will need a family committed to furthering his training to work on reducing accidents. • Making great progress warming up slowly to his environment and eager to keep learning at his own pace Personality & Needs: Buddy is a sensitive soul who startles easily, especially with anything new, loud noises or thunderstorms. Because of this, he would do best in a calm home without children. He thrives with routine and gentle guidance. He would do well in a home with another patient canine companion to keep teaching Buddy “how to dog”. He enjoys high energy, playful, rough-and-tumble play (lots of open-mouth wrestling!), but he takes corrections well and reads other dogs appropriately. Buddy’s Ideal Home: • Patient, calm adopters willing to move at his pace and dedicate time to working with him on house training and basic commands • A predictable routine to help him feel secure • A home without children • Another friendly dog would be a huge bonus (Because he takes time to trust, a slow introduction and allowing Buddy to have his own separate space at first is highly recommended) Buddy isn’t the kind of dog who will be instantly outgoing—but if you’re willing to give him the time he needs, you’ll gain a deeply loyal companion who will quietly steal your heart. If you’re looking for a sweet, sensitive pup to grow with, Buddy might just be your guy

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
