foster doggo HAPPY. HAPPY recognized that I was lost and barked over to me and I squeezed under the fence to get to them. I was taken in, fed, cleaned up and registered thru ACS! I'm grateful that they found me because I was hungry and very itchy from living on the streets. My foster says that I am San Antonio's greatest wingman because all these girls keep running up to scratch and pet me and tell me how handsome I am! A shux, they are soooo sweet!!! My foster says that this magic power is lost on him because he is married with a new baby, but I can help someone else start conversations and maybe meet that special someone! I am a 30lb five-month-old male lab-mix. I am very calm, sweet, social and affectionate. I'm medium energy, and there is nothing that I like more than going on walks and meeting new people so I can give them hugs with my big soft paws. My foster has been impressed with me so far. I know how to sit, I'm good on the leash, and I do very well in my kennel (no accidents). I play well and wrestle with other doggies, I'm nice to cats, gentle with children, and am polite to strangers. I even look sharp in bandanas and ties. I am going to grow up to be a medium-to-big dog, probably 50-70lbs. I'd love to be an indoor dog in a home with a yard and active parents and children to play with and follow around. If I have a dog sibling or two, that would be great! I like going to the dog park, but I'm also really good about flopping out on the sofa and just binge-watching bad television for hours with you. I like truck rides and seeing new things. Scratches and belly rubs are my reward of choice, even over treatos if you can believe that. Do you have a crush on someone who goes to the park? Don't know how to start the conversation? I'm your icebreaker! Let your new wingman do the talking and let's see if there is chemistry! Trust me, I'm the very best at this! I can't wait to meet you!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
