ind of dog who bonds deeply with her people. She loves affection, happily leans in for cuddles, and would be more than content claiming a spot next to you—ideally in your bed, because in her mind, that’s exactly where she belongs. She’s mellow, kind, and carries herself with a calm, easygoing presence that makes her a wonderful companion for everyday life. She’s also a great partner out in the world. Hazel rides well in the car, behaves nicely in public, and does well during vet visits. On leash, she walks politely and enjoys getting out for adventures, whether that’s a neighborhood stroll or a weekend outing. She’s the type of dog who will happily go explore with you and then come home ready to relax by your side. Hazel was surrendered due to conflict with another female dog in the home. She did well with a male dog but tended to take on a more dominant role, so her ideal home would either be as the only dog or with a well-matched male and thoughtful introductions. She has done well around chickens, which is a big plus, and while she has been around cats, she was inclined to chase in a playful way, so slow, structured introductions and management would be important if a home has cats. She has shown that she’s not comfortable around children, so an adult-only home will be the best fit for her. With adults, however, she is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and devoted. Hazel does have some resource guarding tendencies, particularly around food and when resting in bed. She communicates clearly and gives warnings, but if those signals are ignored, she can escalate. Because of this, she will need an experienced, attentive owner who respects her boundaries and is committed to setting her up for success. Feeding her separately and being mindful around high-value spaces like the bed will go a long way in maintaining harmony. The incidents with the other female dog appeared to stem from overstimulation and redirected behavior, which reinforces that she will do best in a home that can provide structure, awareness, and calm management in multi-pet situations. She is securely containable in 6-foot deer fencing and has proven to be a reliable, easy dog in many day-to-day situations. With the right home, Hazel is going to be an incredibly loyal and loving companion—one of those dogs who forms a deep bond and sticks by your side through everything. If you’re looking for a soft, soulful, affectionate dog who will happily join you on adventures and then curl up beside you at the end of the day, Hazel is ready to be your devoted partner.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
