They thrive in active homes where they can burn off energy, engage with their people, and enjoy both playtime and affection. Leon’s Story & Personality: Leon is a fun-loving, energetic little guy with a personality that will keep you smiling all day long. When he gets excited (which is often!), his whole body wiggles in the cutest way—it’s impossible not to fall in love. He can be a little shy when first meeting new people, but give Leon a little time and his true personality comes bursting out—playful, affectionate, and full of life. Once he’s comfortable, he becomes a total lovebug who enjoys climbing into your lap, handing out kisses, and soaking up attention. Leon has a high energy level and will need plenty of daily exercise to keep him happy and balanced. He loves playing, exploring, and is also great at entertaining himself when needed. A fenced yard is important for him so he has a safe space to run and burn off his energy. He does great with other dogs and would likely enjoy having a canine companion to play with. While he hasn’t been tested with cats, he may try to chase or play with them. He loves people of all kinds, but due to his energy level, he would do best in a home with older children who can match his enthusiasm. Leon is almost housebroken and is doing very well with his training. He does not require a crate unless used as a tool to help finish his potty training. He walks well on a leash and enjoys getting out and about. His ideal home would be with someone who is home most of the time and can give him the attention, exercise, and companionship he craves. Leon truly thrives when he’s with his people—whether that’s playing, cuddling, or just being nearby. Leon’s Ideal Home: Active household ready for a high-energy dog Fenced yard for safe play and exercise Someone home most of the day Older children or an adult household Another playful dog is a plus Someone patient to let him warm up and shine Ready to Welcome This Wiggly Boy into Your Life? Leon is equal parts playful energy and snuggly affection. If you’re looking for a fun, loving companion who will keep life exciting and full of cuddles, Leon is ready to bring his wiggles and kisses straight into your heart. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
