Dachshund Dogs For Adoption in Tampa, FL, USA

Dog Breed: Dachshund (long coat). Hi there, I'm Dexter — and I just turned 13, which means I've officially earned the right to be the center of someone's universe. I&

amp;#39;m a distinguished gentleman of a certain age, and I carry myself accordingly. I sit up tall when I want your attention (or a treat), I greet everyone I meet like they're my favorite person, and I will absolutely go for a car ride if you're offering. I love cuddles, treats, a good game of fetch or "chase me" (2–5 minutes max — I have a reputation to maintain), and I take my sleeping arrangements very seriously. Dog bed, hard floor, back to the dog bed, maybe the couch, possibly the closet, definitely the bathmat — I like to keep things interesting. I am looking for someone who wants to be MY person. Not one of many. Mine. --- My Ideal Home I do best as the only pet in a home with someone who is around most of the time — working remotely, retired, or able to bring me along on their daily adventures. I am good with men and women and love meeting new people wherever we go. --- A Few Important Things to Know Separation anxiety: I get anxious when left alone — and I mean alone — even if other pets are home. I'll let you know about it vocally. My dream home is someone who works from home or can take me most places they go. Resource guarding: I love attention, and I take it personally when other animals interrupt my time with my person. I've had a few scuffles with other dogs and cats over this. One incident did result in a minor bite — no stitches required, and everyone healed up fine — but to keep everyone safe, I should be the only pet in my forever home. Seizures & medication: I had my first seizure recently and have been started on Keppra to manage them. I haven't had any since starting medication, but I do require a committed adopter who can maintain my medication schedule and monitor my health. This is non-negotiable — my forever family must be prepared for this responsibility. --- What I Bring to the Table I am, by all accounts, an incredibly sweet boy. My foster family will tell you — I sit up tall and proud when I want to say hello, I love hard, and I am completely devoted to my person. My previous family is heartbroken that circumstances changed. Their only wish is that I find someone new to love me the way they did. If you're looking for a loyal, funny, opinionated little gentleman who just wants to be your whole world — I might be exactly what you didn't know you needed. If you know I'm your forever pup, fill out an adoption application at daretorescue/adoption-application — and don't forget to put my name on your application! Can't adopt but want to help? You can sponsor my care while I wait for my forever home — donate at daretorescue/donation or send a check payable to DARE: DARE | PO Box 21161 | Tampa, FL 32210

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
