FOSTER COMMENTS: Meet Ruby — your future couch companion and gentle best friend. Ruby is the definition of easygoing. With her calm, laid-back personality, she’s happiest spending her days napping on a cozy dog bed, lounging on the couch, or soaking up a little sunshine. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance dog who fits seamlessly into a relaxed home, Ruby might be exactly who you’ve been waiting for. Don’t let her chill vibe fool you—Ruby absolutely lights up when she sees her people. She greets you with her signature “helicopter tail wag,” a full-body wiggle that shows just how happy she is to be loved. She’s incredibly sweet, affectionate, and one of the most obedient dogs her foster has ever met. Ruby is friendly with both people and other dogs, especially those her size or bigger. She enjoys playtime and gets excited when she spots a potential dog friend on walks. That said, she’s perfectly content being your one and only pet—no other dog required. She’s fully housebroken and does great on a leash, making daily walks an easy and enjoyable routine. Ruby doesn’t need a fenced yard and would do just fine in an apartment thanks to her quiet nature—she’s not one to bark, even when other dogs around her are making noise. She’s also comfortable being left alone during a typical workday, making her a great match for working professionals. At night, Ruby prefers the simple luxuries in life—like stretching out on the couch instead of sleeping in a crate. She truly thrives in a home where she can relax, feel safe, and be part of the family. Ruby’s ideal home is one where she’ll get a couple of daily walks, plenty of comfy spots to nap, and lots of love. Whether you’re a single person or a family, she’ll fit right in as your calm, loyal companion. If you’re looking for a quiet, sweet, and wonderfully low-key dog who will greet you with joy and spend her days by your side, Ruby is ready to meet you. EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Ruby was originally admitted as a stray from a rural shelter in 2020. She quickly found a wonderful adopter and had a great life with him. The adopter had to move out of state to care for aging family members and unfortunately could not take Ruby with him due to his new living situation. Sadly he surrendered Ruby back to Best Friend Pet Adoption since he knew we would find another adopter who would love Ruby as much as he did. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
