AY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Chardonnay and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (08/02) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria (3351 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Chardonnay Best Guess for Breed: Retriever and beagle mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of April 2026 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 26 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Because she is shy, Chardonnay is required to go to a home that already has a confident resident dog that can show her the big wide world isn't so scary. All about Chardonnay: After doing an amazing job raising her six puppies—Chief, Cocoa, Calvin, Cone, Cher and Charlotte—Chardonnay is finally ready to find a forever home of her own. Chardonnay is a very sweet, gentle girl who is still learning that people can be trusted. New experiences can feel overwhelming, and she may initially belly crawl, tuck her tail or hesitate to walk. With patience and reassurance, however, she is already beginning to make progress. Chardonnay gains tremendous confidence from other dogs. She happily follows her foster siblings around, walks more comfortably when they are nearby and seeks affection after watching them interact with people. A calm, confident resident dog could be a wonderful role model and companion for her. As Chardonnay settles in and feels safe, we expect her loving personality to continue to blossom. She is a young adult with plenty of wonderful adventures ahead of her—from leisurely sniffy walks and playful romps to quiet evenings relaxing with her favorite humans. Chardonnay is looking for a patient, loving family who will give her the time and space she needs to come out of her shell. In return, she promises a lifetime of loyal companionship—and after raising six puppies, she has certainly earned the chance to kick back with her very own glass of chardonnay! What Shelter Staff Say About Me: Chardonnay is shy when she first meetings someone new but she opens up quickly and is incredibly sweet. With a little bit of training, we know that she'll be the perfect companion. What My Foster Says About Me: She is nervous in new environments but is otherwise the sweetest, best girl and great with other dogs. I am obsessed with her! Heartworm information: Chardonnay is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Chardonnay has completed this activity restriction period. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
