s pretty sure she wrote it—because all she wants is to be part of your world… preferably right next to you. She is a loving, 42 lb, three (3) year old lady from West Virginia. Mya is the ultimate sweetheart. Outside, Mya is the total package. She loves to play fetch and lay on her back and wiggle in the grass. And when it’s time to recharge? She’s a pro, whether it’s stretched out on the couch, curled up on your bed, or tucked under a shady chair. Being a sleek black beauty, she can get warm easily, so she appreciates a good rest or fan to catch her breath. And she’s earned it. This amazing girl gave birth to five puppies in December. You can see her motherly nature as she always wants to know where you are and where you are going. She will start your day with caring kisses, making sure everyone is nice and clean. She has lost her postpartum weight and is getting more and more self-sufficent getting up on beds and couches. Her medium-length black coat is easy to maintain with a weekly brush. A yard with a fence or a secure leashing system is preferred as Mya loves to keep an eye on the birds, squirrels, bunnies, and deer in her foster family's yard. She’d be happy as your one-and-only or with another playful pup—her foster brother gives her two paws up for wrestling, tug-of-war, cuddles, and kisses. Don’t let her size fool you… she can absolutely hold her own! She's a pro at Work from Home next to her foster mom's laptop, and is an expert at following a food, potty, play, nap schedule. A home with older kids would be the best fit, as Mya is still learning about personal space. She is unsure as to her feelings regarding cats as she hasn't met any yet. Mya is house-broken and comfortable with a big crate for up to 5-6 hours so far. She knows her name even better than her foster brother and comes to the door right when called. She has mastered "sit" and is currently working on "lay down." She is up to date on her vaccinations. She sleeps through the night. She is a relatively quiet girl, except when playing tug or her foster brother is guarding the front window. She wants to join in the chorus too! If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, best friend who just wants to be by your side and stare into your eyes… Mya is ready to be part of your world. Mya is perfect for a family wanting a constant companion that follows a routine schedule. Did you meet Mya at Plum's Walking and Wagging or the PetSmart in the North Hills? Apply to adopt Mya today. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
