p;rsquo;s the first dog I’ve fostered who likes to sleep in a laundry basket. If he sees a laundry basket or even a box with fabric anywhere he’ll jump in and curl up. Like a cat. I’ve fostered around 50 small breed dogs by now and I have never seen this. His dog bed is a laundry basket with his blankets. Clean laundry I have to put away immediately. He’ll even jump into a small hamper. Another thing he does that is unusual is go downstairs. Not that it’s unusual for dogs in general, but with strays it is very unusual. Even if I’m down there and they want to follow me they will just wait on the landing. He had no potty training when I got him. I don’t know if he has experience with stairs or not, but he took them like a champ the first time. He has also remembered he left a toy downstairs, ran down to get it, and ran right back upstairs. He’s a real smartie. His potty training is really his only challenge and he’s coming along with that. He’s still plenty young and a quick learner. He is a little mischievous with getting out of the fence. He’ll find any opening he can fit and squeeze through right in front of me. Fortunately, he’s not a runner. He still chews a little. Not too bad for his age. He likes his toys and playing with the neighbor dog. He’s super friendly with everyone and doesn’t bark a lot. He doesn’t like his leash which is normal with former strays. He sleeps with me. The garbage has to be kept out of his reach or he’ll get into it even if it’s empty. However, he’s not food motivated. I free feed him. He will often wait to eat until I’m around. He loves to nuzzle and cuddle and is vey good at both. Cooper is super sweet and a lot of fun. He’s got a great personality and is very smart. He’d be great with a family or an individual. Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $625.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
