h a heart absolutely overflowing with affection. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who wants nothing more than to love and be loved, Scutty may just be your perfect match. This handsome boy is a literal lapdog despite his size. He will happily curl up in your lap, rest his head against you, and snooze like a baby for hours. Scutty is happiest when he’s close to his people, soaking up attention and companionship. He’s the kind of dog who forms deep bonds and simply wants to be included in everyday life. Scutty has a moderate energy level that makes him wonderfully easy to live with. He enjoys going on walks, exploring the yard, and occasionally showing off some adorable zoomies, but afterward he’s perfectly content to settle in for a long nap. His foster family says one of the cutest things about him is the happy little prance he does when he’s excited. He also has an obsession with toys — especially his favorite squeaky reindeer, which he proudly carries around everywhere. If he’s heading outside, the reindeer usually has to come too. One of Scuttlebutt’s most endearing quirks is the way he tilts his head while watching dog videos on YouTube. It’s impossible not to smile when he studies the screen with complete curiosity and confusion. Scutty is friendly and affectionate with people and has done wonderfully with adults, teenagers, and older children he’s met. He currently lives with a teenage girl and absolutely adores her. He’s also done well meeting strangers and visitors, greeting them with affection and friendliness. While he isn’t much of a barker, he is definitely a talker in his own way and will “whine conversations” to his people as he tries to communicate his thoughts and feelings. Scuttlebutt is house-trained, though he does best on a consistent schedule since he doesn’t reliably tell you when he needs to go outside. He rides beautifully in the car and walks very nicely on leash. He also enjoys wearing hoodies and coats in cold weather, which somehow makes him even more charming. Like many sensitive dogs, Scutty does come with some challenges that adopters should be prepared to work through patiently and compassionately. He is reactive toward unfamiliar dogs and requires very slow, structured introductions. Once he trusts another dog, however, he becomes affectionate, playful, and happiest with canine companionship. He currently lives with a female Golden Retriever and has become very bonded to her after careful introductions. Because of his comfort level with female dogs, he may do best with a calm female canine companion if there is another dog in the home. Scutty also struggles with separation anxiety. He does not do well when left completely alone for long periods and becomes distressed in a kennel. Because of this, he needs a home where someone is home most of the time, able to bring him along frequently, or where he has another compatible dog for companionship and comfort. He is incredibly people-focused and thrives when he feels secure and connected. His foster family also believes Scutty may have experienced harsh handling in the past. He can become fearful if a leash gets tangled around him or during sudden movements, and he seeks reassurance during storms and high winds. Despite this, he continues to show enormous trust, affection, and resilience every day. The perfect home for Scuttlebutt would be a patient, loving family who understands that some of the sweetest dogs come with a little emotional baggage. He needs companionship, consistency, and gentle guidance to continue building confidence and security. In return, he offers unwavering affection, endless cuddles, and the kind of loyalty that only comes from a dog who truly loves with his whole heart. Scutty is currently being treated for heart worms, but with the proper treatment it won't be a hindrance. Scutty is more than just a good boy — he’s the kind of companion who becomes family. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
