ing, which is a 24-hour community effort to support non-profits, has ended, our need for ongoing funding will continue throughout the year. Each dog's bio includes an active donate button that lets you support our current and future dogs. At 6 months old, this gorgeous pure-breed shepherd puppy joined our rescue family when she was just 4 weeks old and only 3 lbs. Otti was found "wandering the streets," which is difficult to imagine since she was hardly mobile, treated for dehydration, and sent home to us since she's too young to be at the shelter. We had so much fun picking out a name for her and showering her with love; her foster family has chosen to call her Otti, as she reminded them of a baby otter when she arrived. She also had a small injury to her ear, which healed right away after she was given antibiotics to prevent infection! Her daily routine until she was fully vaccinated at 4 months was filled with the cutest activities: eating, pooping, and sleeping, all while enjoying plenty of snuggles. A lover of toys, her fuzzy bed, her three housemates, and her people, Otti grew up with excursions in her stroller, accompanying her folks on errands and outings, including heading to work with one of her foster family members when no one could be home with her. When not in her pen, she loved to sleep right next to a resident dog or by her humans' slippered feet. She’s now completely crate- and potty-trained, walks well on leash on her frequent walks, and still adores her mates and her family. And still snuggles right in. Just as we were about to take her bio live for adoption, we noticed that she was beginning to tail-chase, which can be caused by early weaning or anxiety, and shepherds are a breed prone to this behavior. We immediately consulted a behavior-oriented trainer and followed up with the Board-Certified Behavior team at UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital. With their experienced eye, they diagnosed Otti with anxious behaviors, and her foster family immediately implemented the protocols established by her behavior veterinarians, along with prescription medication. Her anxiety has diminished, but her tail chasing hasn’t completely abated. We’ve now added an SSRI and are waiting for it to fully take effect. Otti’s love of toys and teething led her to swallow one of her favorite fuzzy toys, a retriever-style. Labs and goldens are more prone to swallowing toys. which led to abdominal surgery and her spay at the same time. Otti has recovered completely, and long, fuzzy soft toys are banned at her house. Otti’s our special needs pup looking to match with a forever family who understands what may be a lifelong anxious or OCD behavior and continues the management and medical protocol set forth by her behavior vets. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
