ooking like life had thoroughly kicked his little wiener-dog ass. When NorthStar took him in, Pete was skinny, covered in hair loss, had double ear infections, needed a dental, had a growth on his chest, and frankly looked like he’d been through several terrible life choices and at least one bad relationship. The good news? His body is healing. The bad news? Pete has apparently decided that men are canceled. We can’t know exactly what happened to him during his first five years, but we’re pretty certain a man failed this little guy in a big way. Pete would very much like to file for a lifetime restraining order against the male gender and is currently accepting applications from women only. His ideal home consists of: ✔ Women. ✔ More women. ✔ Another friendly dog. ✔ Snacks. ✔ Soft voices. ✔ Someone who is home a lot. ✔ Absolutely no dudes trying to “win him over.” Pete doesn’t bite men. He doesn’t attack men. He simply looks at them and says, “No thank you, sir. I’ve had enough.” He adores other dogs and apparently every anxious little dachshund needs an emotional support dog. He loves toys, running in the yard, car rides, and being close to his person. He sleeps quietly in his crate when he knows you’re nearby because, like many of us, he simply wants reassurance that everyone isn’t leaving him forever. Now, let’s discuss the elephant in the room: Pete is not housebroken. There. We said it. Pete wears a belly band because sometimes his feelings get bigger than his bladder. He uses potty pads when available, goes outside with encouragement, and continues to work on his life skills. He’s basically a middle-aged man who refuses therapy but is making small improvements. He also hates cats, so if you own a cat, Pete would like to respectfully suggest that you do not. Pete needs: • A female-only home • Another dog companion • Someone home most of the day • Patience • Understanding • A sense of humor • An appreciation for tiny dogs with enormous emotional baggage He is not a plug-and-play dog. He is a project. A tiny, adorable, traumatized, opinionated project. But if you’re looking for a fiercely loyal little shadow who will love you with his entire crooked, anxious, dachshund heart, Prospect Pete might just be your guy. Apply at .northstarpets and ask for PROSPECT PETE LA. Warning: Pete comes with trust issues, a loud bark, occasional accidents, and enough emotional damage to qualify for his own therapist.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
